INTRODUCTION
Kidnapping for ransom is a highly-organized and fast-growing multi-million dollar business. Today, kidnapping is not just a problem for the wealthy individual, corporate executive, celebrity or other VIPs but it even poses a problem for the middle-class. Given the present state of our economy, incidents of kidnapping for ransom, carjackings and home invasions are on the rise.
EK started out as a extreme adventure business providing customized kidnapping experiences to clients who wanted to experience the ultimate in reality based adventures. In providing these "fantasy" adventures to its clients EK has gained a wealth of knowledge in the fine points of kidnapping. This practical and hands-on experience now affords EK the opportunity to expand its services to include kidnapping threat assessment and mitigation services.
Kidnappings generally occur for one or two reasons: financial gain or terrorism. Many kidnappers see kidnapping as a way to boost their income and make a sizable amount of money in a single action. While kidnapping takes a lot of pre-planning and attention to detail, the so-called "rewards" of the effort are almost entirely worth it, at least in the mind of the kidnappers.
Recently, a new phenomenon in kidnapping has appeared on the scene. It’s called "Express" kidnapping. Express kidnapping is the abduction of a victim for only a short period of time, frequently for no more than two or three hours. During this time, the victim is forced to withdraw money out of his/her ATM account and is then released. The kidnapper will also relieve the victim of his/her personal possessions (i.e., jewelry, credit cards, cash, cell phone, etc.).
Traditional kidnappings generally occur where the victims are either wealthy and/or hold a position of authority or influence. Celebrities, corporate executives, government officials and other VIPs are all at risk of being kidnapped and being held for ransom. In recent years, corporate executives have especially become frequent targets of kidnappers, especially in Latin America, Mexico and certain European countries.
Kidnappings are usually well-organized, with a lot of thought and pre-planning done by the kidnappers. Potential victims are intensely watched and their daily routines carefully noted, sometimes for months prior to the actual kidnapping. By the time the victim is abducted, the kidnapper or kidnappers know their intended victim very intimately. This provides a very strong psychological tool for the kidnapper as well in dealing with his/her victim and obtaining the desired results from the kidnapping.
In recent years, kidnapping has become more and more violent. In the past, victims were rarely molested or harmed. Now, it is not unusual to hear about female captives being raped or men being beaten and/or mutilated. Ears and other body-parts are often sent to the victim’s families as a show of seriousness of purpose on the part of the kidnappers.
Kidnappers often make use of violence in a kidnapping. While some kidnappers use violence as a tool of persuasion to make sure that their demands are met, there are others who use it indiscriminately as a means of physically and/or mentally tormenting their victims. The use of violence, and even of torture, is a way for kidnappers to display their power and control, even life and death control, over their victims. In this type of scenario, the ransom is not the only goal of the abduction and may not even ensure the well-being and safety of the victim. We want to help our client's prevent these situations from happening to them. We have the know how and the experience, contact Adam Thick for a FREE consultation.
